Crawl, Walk, Run...SOAR
Sometimes you seek new opportunities and other times you are pushed into new adventures. Either way, the result is the same…going in a new direction. People can be apprehensive about doing something new because of the fear of the unknown. One reason for this is that after you’ve been doing something for a while, you are very proficient and maybe even an expert in the field. Most of what you do has become second nature. When you switch over to a new field, all of this goes away and it’s back to square one.
I learned that the best approach to entering a new field is use the crawl, walk, run method. You should start out slow and give yourself plenty of time to learn the skills and what it takes to be successful. In my recent position, I definitely started out slow and it took me a while to catch onto the office rhythm. There were plenty of mistakes and funny moments as I learned to walk. However, before I knew it, I had increased my confidence and also increased my speed to complete the tasks. Then recently there was a moment in my fourth week where I paused and actually took notice that I was fluid. I realized that I can do this job. And that I can do it well.

Don’t let anyone tell you that as a working mother you aren’t able to SOAR. Instead, ignore the negativity, do your best, and show them what you can do.

Give yourself time to learn the new position, set systems in place to reduce your stress, and then SOAR.
